Product photography for knitwear makers
Knitwear photographs as a shapeless blob when the light is flat: cables vanish, drape disappears and heathered yarn turns to noise. BrandStills renders your actual knitted piece into a styled scene with the stitch pattern, texture and colourway kept as photographed.
A hand-knitted jumper contains forty hours and a photograph can erase all of them. Flat light turns cables into faint wrinkles, a dark yarn into a silhouette, and a carefully blocked lace panel into grey fuzz. Machine-made fast fashion photographs fine in bad light. Handmade texture does not, which is unfair, because texture is the entire argument for the price.
This page is the handmade-texture story. If you run a sewn clothing label with repeatable stock, the clothing brands page covers fit and catalogue problems; knitwear has its own physics.
Three things knit photos must carry
Stitch definition. Every stitch casts a tiny shadow, and those shadows are the texture. They need soft light arriving from the side. A window on a bright-overcast day is the best knitwear light there is.
Drape. Yarn behaves: merino falls, cotton holds, mohair floats. A photo that shows the fabric folding and hanging tells a buyer more than any fibre listing. Do not stretch pieces flat.
Colour truth. Hand-dyed and heathered yarns shift under warm bulbs, and a buyer who ordered mustard and received amber leaves a review about it. Daylight, no flash, always.
From two phone photos to a season of scenes
Photograph the piece folded on a plain surface near the window: one straight overhead, one at an angle, and a close shot of the stitch pattern or colourwork you want to survive intact. The app locks the pattern, texture and colourway, then renders the piece into the scene you pick.
Knitwear suits softness: a flat lay for the clean listing shot, a bedside scene for blankets and shawls, an autumn scene when the leaves turn, and a winter scene for the weeks when wool sells itself. A matching hat, mitten and scarf set can go into one collection frame rather than three lonely listings.
The September problem
Knitwear sales are crushed into autumn and winter, and the stock is finished in the wrong light: you bind off the winter collection in August, when golden-hour styling is nowhere to be found. Because finished pieces stay in the app library, the cosy October scene and the Christmas set are renders, not reshoots, and each takes about a minute.
Block it, photograph it once, and let the scenes do the styling. Get the app or see how it works.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my cables and stitch patterns disappear in photos?
Stitch definition is shadow. Flat frontal light, a flash or an overhead bulb fills those tiny shadows in and the texture goes with them. Side light from a window brings cables, bobbles and ribbing back.
How do I photograph knitwear flat without it looking lifeless?
Fold with intent rather than laying the piece dead flat: a sleeve folded across the body, a rolled brim, a gentle wave in a blanket. Soft shapes photograph as softness, which is the thing you are selling.
Will a render keep my exact yarn colourway?
Yes. The app locks the colours and pattern of the piece you photographed, so a hand-dyed speckle or a heathered marl comes through as itself. Shoot the reference in daylight so the starting colour is honest.

BrandStills photographs your garment as an item, folded, hung or laid flat, and places it in styled scenes with the print, stitching and colour unchanged. It does not generate on-model try-on shots, and does not pretend to.
Product photography for hat makersOff a head, a hat collapses: the crown caves, the brim warps and hard light drops the brim's own shadow across the front. BrandStills renders the hat you photographed, shape intact, into clean and seasonal scenes with the stitching and badge unchanged.
Product photography for Etsy sellersEtsy listings live or die in a 300-pixel thumbnail. BrandStills turns the phone photos you already have into clean studio and lifestyle shots of your real item, with the label, the stitching and the glaze all intact.
