product photography cost

How much does professional product photography cost?

Freelance product photographers commonly charge from around 30 dollars to a few hundred dollars per finished image, and studios quote day rates from the hundreds into the low thousands. Rates vary widely by country, city and product type, and extras such as models, styling and heavy retouching are usually billed on top.

There is no single going rate for product photography, which is why quotes for the same brief can differ by a factor of ten. What you can rely on are the pricing models, because nearly every photographer uses one of three.

The three ways photographers price

  1. Per image. Common for e-commerce work. Simple pack shots on white sit at the low end, commonly from around 30 dollars each in cheaper markets, while styled or composited images run to a few hundred dollars apiece.
  2. Per day or half day. Studios and experienced freelancers often quote this way, typically in the hundreds to low thousands depending on the market, with the number of finished images agreed up front.
  3. Per product. Some studios offer packages, for example a set of angles per product at a flat rate, which suits marketplace sellers with long catalogues.

Treat all of these as hedged ranges, not promises. A photographer in a small town and one in a capital city are in different businesses, and rates shift year to year.

What pushes a quote up

The camera work is often the cheapest part. Costs climb when the brief includes models, food or prop styling, location hire, art direction, rush turnaround, or extended usage rights for advertising. Retouching is the quiet multiplier: deep clean-up of glass, jewellery and liquids takes longer than the shoot itself.

Spending the budget where it counts

For a small shop the sensible split is to pay a professional for the few images that define the brand, then produce the everyday volume yourself. Listings, social posts and seasonal refreshes burn through images far faster than any budget survives at per-image rates.

That volume side is where BrandStills fits. You photograph the real product two or three times on a phone, and the app renders it into new settings, from a white background pack shot to a styled podium scene, with the label, logo and proportions kept as photographed. Each image takes about a minute, and free credits on install let you judge the quality against your own product before spending anything.

Frequently asked questions

Why do per-image prices vary so much?

Because an image is not one unit of work. A white background pack shot with light retouching sits at the bottom of the range; a styled lifestyle shot with props, a model or composited retouching can cost ten times more. Experience, city and usage rights all move the number too.

Is per-image or day-rate pricing cheaper?

Per-image pricing usually wins when you need a handful of shots; a day rate wins once you need a large batch, because a photographer can move through many simple products in a day. Ask for both quotes and divide the day rate by a realistic shot count.

Do models and props cost extra?

Almost always. Model fees, prop sourcing, food styling and location hire are typically line items on top of the photography itself, so a lifestyle or on-model brief can double a quote before a single frame is shot.
